The updated crate includes, as before, the 2.0-liter block, starter, alternator, turbocharger, intake, and the direct injection fuel system.
You’ll have to source your own transmission, clutch, flywheel, intercooler, and cooling system. This is actually a good thing, as you have more freedom to configure your car’s drivetrain. If you’re building a race car, you’ll obviously need notably different parts. The same goes for things like the exhaust system. Some of them are available thorugh Honda Performance Development (HPD), but you can also use parts from other vendors.
The HPD Controls Package is the big news here, as it comes with an ECU system. Developed and calibrated by HPD, it’s mostly designed for track use, but it will get the job done in a road-oriented project car too. There’s also an engine harness with flying leads for power, ground, and ignition, as well as a radiator fan and fuel pump.
Where can you use it? Well, for starters you can build your own version of Honda’s Civic Type R TC race car. Or you can upgrade a lesser Civic model for a proper sleeper. The engine is small enough to fit into a variety of Honda models, including the old 2000, but it’s not restricted to cars wearing the Japanese badge.
The crate engine with the complete Controls Package will be available starting May 1, 2021. There’s no word on how much will it cost, but the engine itself fetches a little over $6,500.
As a brief reminder, the 2.0-liter engine in the Civic Type R packs 306 horsepower on the American market (vs 316 horses in Europe and Japan). It enables the hatchback to hit a top speed of 169 mph.
