Casio Celebrates 20 Years of Edifice Watches with Honda Racing Homage - Car and Driver

The horological and motorsport enthusiast communities come together again with this love letter from watchmaker Casio to Honda’s Scuderia AlphaTauri F1 racing team. To celebration the 20 years that Casio has been making its Edifice watches, the Japanese tech powerhouse has designed this slick outfit for an existing timepiece, an ECB-10 with a carbon face, gold Edifice branding, and a blood-red band.

Casio has been the official watch partner of the Honda F1 racing team for more than four years, regularly releasing collaborations with various departments in the team’s portfolio, including the 2018 Scuderia Torro Rosso pit crew. The team-inspired watches are not only stylish, but provide necessary tech for the crew members. Bluetooth and smartphone app connections allow for auto-adjustment of world time zones–important for globetrotters– while a fancy lap timer also can export the day’s records from the wrist to a paired phone with no fuss.

The watch is no less useful to non-crew members of the F1 team, however; within the app are direct toggles and settings for a timer, alarm clocks, and again that very cool lap time recorder. All of which can help you keep track of hot laps around your local cul-de-sac, or you know, the dinner you’re probably cooking for yourself tonight. It's a Casio, not Hublot.

The watch is handsome, with just enough of a nod to Honda Racing fans to serve as a conversation starter at the next Cars and Coffee. The Edifice design team has kept the watch from becoming too Honda, so you don't have to know who Helmut Marko and Franz Tost are to enjoy the watch. Anyone who has an affinity for the Honda brand will appreciate this timepiece.

The relationship between Scuderia AlphaTauri and Casio is anything but rare, as luxury watch makers dominate the ad space available on F1 vehicles. What makes this corporate collaboration special is the unity between two Japanese namesakes with a reputation for affordability and engineering prowess.

In the somewhat dramatic and over-the-top world of F1, partnerships like this foster a connection between civilians and the world's best drivers, and, of course, their talented crew members. We can't all earn a pole position, but there are better ways to check the time than the smartphones stashed in our pockets.
