Amid escalating advances in the electric vehicle industry, General Motors and Honda announced earlier this month that the two automotive manufacturers have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a North American alliance.
Under the non-binding deal, GM and Honda will share vehicle platforms for both electric and combustion systems, as well as technology costs.
The companies said that co-development planning discussions will begin immediately, and they’ll begin engineering work in early 2021, though no details were given regarding what specific vehicles are planned.
The announcement follows up on an agreement between GM and Honda signed in April for the duo to co-develop two new electric vehicles (EV) for Honda that will use GM’s global EV platform that is powered by Ultium batteries. The companies noted that their working relationship began more than two decades ago, with recent partnerships focusing on fuel cells, batteries, and a shared autonomous vehicle called Cruise Origin.
GM President Mark Reuss and Honda Motor Co. Executive Vice President Seiji Kuraishi commented that the alliance will help both companies accelerate investment in mobility innovation, free up resources, and achieve substantial cost efficiencies.
GM and Honda’s EV alliance — to be governed by a joint committee of senior executives from both companies — comes after a similar international partnership between Ford and Volkswagen that finalized earlier in 2020.
