Honda boosts styling and safety on 2021 Odyssey - South Bend Tribune

While Americans continue to flock to trucks and SUVs, Honda is one of the few manufacturers that remains committed to offering a full lineup of vehicles.

Witness the revamped 2021 Odyssey. While many manufacturers have abandoned the segment, Honda continues to advance its minivan because it knows there is no more efficient way of moving people and cargo.

“Anything comparable in size and refinement would cost many thousand of dollars more than the Odyssey,” said Bryan Smith, a sales consultant at Basney Honda in Mishawaka. “Though it’s aimed at families, it has a surprisingly wide demographic.”

Some baby boomers, for example, still prefer the Odyssey because it has lots of room for grandkids and cargo capacity for extended trips, Smith explained.

With a starting price just above $30,000, there are no more affordable options that can seat up to eight people, carry 150 cubic feet of cargo and tow up to 3,500 pounds while still reaching 28 mpg on the highway.

With numerous awards under its belt and top safety ratings, the Odyssey is powered by a 280-horsepower V-6 engine that can deactivate cylinders until power is needed. It is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Produced in Alabama, all models come with antilock disc brakes with brake-force distribution and brake assist, traction control with snow mode, an electric parking brake, hill-start assist, a rearview camera and Honda Sensing — including adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane departure warning and lane keep assist, collision mitigation braking with pedestrian and traffic sign detection and forward collision warning.

The LX comes with full power accessories, an eight-way power driver’s seat, a four-way power passenger’s seat, rear bag hooks, keyless entry with push-button start, automatic climate control, automatic headlights, rear privacy glass, Bluetooth and a 160-watt audio system.

The EX adds a 12-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, heated outside mirrors, power sliding doors, second row sunshades, tri-zone climate control, blind spot detection with rear traffic alert, fog lights, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite and HD radio and an 8-inch display screen.

The EX-L includes leather-trimmed upholstery, a power and programmable tailgate, an auto dimming rearview mirror, an eight-way power passenger’s seat and a moonroof while the Touring adds front and rear parking sensors, a rear seat entertainment system with a 10.2-inch display, Wi-Fi, navigation, a hand-free tailgate and the CabinWatch system.

The Elite adds a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging, a 550-watt audio system, heated and cooled front seats, rain-sensing wipers and HondaVac.

The Basney showroom, located at 3820 N. Grape Road, Mishawaka, is open 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
