Honda, one of the last automakers to offer manual transmissions in mainstream cars, has been systematically culling its three-pedal lineup. The manual-transmission Accord, Fit, and Civic Coupe all had their number called back in July. The manual-transmission CR-V, CR-Z, and S2000 are long gone. All that holds firm is the Civic. But there is no solace here: the manual Civic sedan is leaving with the tides, too.
This one came on slowly. First, Honda limited the manual to the 2.0-liter engine and not the turbo 1.5-liter. It got picky about trim levels. It put the manual-only Si on hiatus until the next-generation model comes out. Everything pointed this way. Now it has trimmed it further, eliminating the row-your-own, entry-level sedan that provided an approachable, high-quality entry point to the Honda lineup.
The manual Honda lives on only in the Civic hatchback, both the standard model and the hair-raising Type R. Vehicles that prove that Honda is trying, in the face of all of this, to carry the torch. As more companies abandon manuals altogether and replace true performance cars with overpriced costumes, Honda has tried to stem the flow. It brought the Type R here, made sure its manuals were top notch, and continued investing in the Civic even as the CR-V and other crossovers devoured its market share. The company will not give up all at once, instead whittling down manual options and hoping that there is a bottom to this market.
There's a next-generation Civic coming in Spring 2021, followed by a new generation of Si. The hope is that the manual can hang on for at least another generation, long enough that trends change and people start actually buying them. But I suspect it'll be in vain, there is no solace here.
