GM Will Build Two Electric SUVs for Honda by 2024 - RoadandTrack.com

Earlier this month, Honda announced it would aim to sell only electrically-powered vehicles in North America by the year 2040. In that same release, the company revealed it would be working alongside General Motors to develop two SUVs—one for Honda and one for Acura—for the North American market using the American company's Ultium battery technology, aiming for a 2024 model year release.

In a statement given to The Drive and confirmed by Road & Track, Acura said not only would GM help to develop the two SUVs, but it will also be responsible for producing them.

"The 2024 Acura EV is one of the Ultium-based products announced in April 2020," an Acura spokesperson told Road & Track via email. "We are jointly developing two EV SUVs models using GM’s Ultium batteries for the North American market as 2024 model year, one for the Honda brand and one for the Acura brand."

"We did announce in April 2020, that these will be produced by GM," the spokesperson added.

According to The Drive, these SUVs will likely be produced at two separate plants, the Honda model being built in Mexico where the current Chevy Blazer and Equinox are made, and the Acura car being assembled at GM's Tennessee facility where, coincidentally, Cadillac plans to build its electric Lyriq crossover. Acura has yet to release any details on either car, so it's unclear whether the two vehicles will share a platform. We've reached out to GM for more information.
