2021 Honda Pilot vs. 2021 Chevrolet Traverse Comparison - Kelley Blue Book

The 2021 Honda Pilot and 2021 Chevrolet Traverse are popular family-oriented 3-row SUVs. Here’s how they compare.

2021 Honda Pilot

2021 Honda Pilot

2021 Honda Pilot Starting Price: $33,360 | Price Yours or View listings near you

Above Average: Seats up to eight; standard V6 engine; strong resale value.

Below Average: Not particularly spirited handling; no off-road-themed version.

Consensus: The 2021 Honda Pilot is a roomy and comfortable 3-row SUV from a trusted brand and has been a segment favorite through three generations.

2021 Chevrolet Traverse

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

2021 Chevrolet Traverse Starting Price: $30,995 (est.) | Price Yours or View listings near you

Above Average: Spacious interior with adult-size third-row seat; very good luggage space even with the third seats in use; standard 3.6-liter V6 with 310 horses.

Below Average: Common driver-assist features are missing from lower trims; mediocre fuel economy.

Consensus: The 2021 Chevrolet Traverse is the largest vehicle in its class and offers comfortable passenger accommodations and generous luggage space. The only engine choice provides smooth acceleration and so-so fuel economy.

Pilot vs. Traverse: It’s a family affair

Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot seats seven or eight in its three rows, with second-row captain’s chairs restricted to the top trims. Passenger accommodations are roomy, and cargo space ranges from 16.5 cubic feet behind the third row to 82.1–83.9 cubic feet with all seats folded. A 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque is now paired exclusively with a 9-speed automatic. Smooth and sufficiently robust, this V6 tows up to 5,000 pounds (with AWD). Fuel economy is relatively good with EPA combined estimates of 23 mpg (FWD) and 22 mpg (AWD).

The Pilot is capable and comfortable but not particularly sporty, although handling is secure in part thanks to the AWD system’s torque-vectoring technology. Forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control are standard. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert come on all but the base LX. The base version also skips the 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that is standard elsewhere. Leather seating and a power liftgate come with the EX-L. Captain’s chairs become available at the Touring level, along with navigation, rear-seat entertainment, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The top two trims include AWD, ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Chevrolet Traverse

With a 120.9-inch wheelbase and stretching 204.3 inches overall, the Chevrolet Traverse the biggest SUV in its class. Inside, there’s plenty of passenger space, including in the third row, with seven or eight seats overall. The right-side second-row Smart Slide seat allows easy third-row access even with certain child seats in place—great, but why is it only on one side? The Traverse has 23 cubic feet of luggage space behind the third row, and the max cargo capacity is a voluminous 98.2 cubic feet.

The 3.6-liter V6 and 9-speed automatic, paired with FWD or AWD, make a smooth combo and can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Fuel economy is only OK, at 21 mpg combined (FWD) or 20 mpg (AWD). We’re disappointed by the lack of active-safety features on lower trims. All models feature a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Similarities

Both skew toward the larger end of the midsize spectrum and have plenty of interior space.

2021 Honda Pilot Advantages

Stellar resale and reliability; tons of standard safety features.

2021 Chevrolet Traverse Advantages

Lower starting price; better luggage space; seating for up to eight.

Final Recommendation

For our money, we’d go with the Honda Pilot. While the engine is somewhat lackluster, the safety equipment, pricing, reliability, and resale all beat out the Traverse.
