The Honda Passport aims to find the middle ground between two of Honda’s most popular SUVs — the compact CR-V and the midsize Pilot.

Though it shares the same frame and engine as the Pilot, the five-passenger Passport is about eight inches shorter than its larger sibling, which uses its extra length to provide a third row of seating. But at the same time, the Passport is roughtly nine inches longer than the CR-V, resulting in more room for passengers and cargo.

“It’s for those who want the capabilities of the Pilot, but don’t necessary want the third row of seating,” said Steve Peacock, a sales associate with Basney Honda in Mishawaka. “It’s sportier looking than the Pilot and it’s a bit easier to maneuver and park because it isn’t as long.”

Like the Pilot, the Passport is powered by a 280-horsepower, 3.5L V-6 with cylinder deactivation technology. The engine is paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission and can tow up to 5,000 pounds on models equipped with all-wheel drive.

Beyond its sportier looks, the Passport has also been designed to be a bit more off-road capable than the Pilot with nearly an inch higher ground clearance and better approach and departure angles.

“It has the room, safety and comfort of a family vehicle,” said Peacock. “But at the same time, it’s capable of pursuing some off-road adventures.”

A top pick for safety, the Passport comes standard with Honda Sensing, which includes forward collision warning with mitigation braking, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist and road-departure mitigation.

Other standard safety features include anti-lock brakes with brake-force distribution and brake assist, stability and traction control, hill start assist, an electric parking brake with automatic brake hold and a rearview camera with guidelines.

The Passport Sport comes standard with full power accessories, rear privacy glass, automatic tri-zone climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, fog lights, remote engine start, 20-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch touch screen, automatic headlights, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and more.

The EX-L adds leather-trimmed upholstery, a power tailgate, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, heated outside mirrors, a moon roof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 10-way power driver’s seat, a four-way power passenger seat, driver memory functions, satellite radio and HD radio.

The Touring further includes heated rear seats, a hands-free tailgate, power-folding side mirrors, roof rails, Wi-Fi capability, navigation, a 115-volt outlet and premium audio while the Elite comes standard with all-wheel drive and adds cooled front seats, wireless phone charging, rain-sensing wipers and a heated steering wheel.

The Basney showroom, located at 3820 N. Grape Road, Mishawaka, is open 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
